Music Review: Tre’ Mutava

Known for his debut album “The Movies” and his latest single “Moving” (feat. Noah Anthony), Tre’ Mutava is a self-made indie producer, singer, and songwriter based in Overland Park, Kansas. His single “Moving” has amassed over 30k streams on Spotify and over 54k views on Youtube.

So, how did the song and collaboration with Noah Anthony spark? Tre’ recalls, “Noah and I met on Instagram and would hang out and jam. After a couple of months, we sat down and wrote the lyrics and main progression to ‘Moving’ in a two-hour session in my basement.” The song is very cathartic and uplifting, like much of his music.

It centers around knowing when it’s time to move on from a person or situation no matter where you are in your journey. Tre’ describes the first record as a dance record. Tre’ said candidly, “many people can appreciate the sentiment towards ending a significant relationship to grow as an individual.”

Going Viral

Tre’ is a force to be reckoned with, with his TikTok having almost 120k followers. On there he chronicles his everyday life as a successful indie artist and musician. Here, fans get an inside glimpse of his creative process, tour life, and personality. But for Tre’, music is much like breathing; it is intrinsic, fluid, and has been a part of his life from a very young age. He started writing music when he was just 10 years old and attributes his passion for music to both of his parents. His father is a music producer himself, and his mother has been a singer her whole life.

When asked when he knew he wanted to pursue a career in music, he said it was the 6th-grade talent show, he performed an original song on guitar when he decided he wanted to have a music career. It wasn’t until high school he began exploring the ever-changing and vast world of music production.

Pre-K

After listening to his most streamed song, “Pre-K,” it was no surprise that one of his biggest influences is Jon Bellion. “Jon Bellion has been a significant influence for the longest time,” Tre’ confesses, “I appreciate the intention in his music, lyrically and instrumentally.” His debut album, “The Movies,” pulls from many genres, from Pop to Musical Theatre. The tone is inspirational and hopeful while still being vulnerable and honest. In “Best Year,” Tre’ admits, “this year wasn’t the best year, but I know that next year will be the best year of my life.” On tracks like, “Proud” (feat, Astro and Friends). The subject matter is darker, touching on the struggle of being addicted to pornography.

There are even love songs on the record, with soulful guitar solos, such as “Second Guessing” (feat. Mills), which is about overcoming the fear of making the wrong decision in loving someone. The album is reflective, experimental, and sonically cohesive with a nostalgic undertone. From the opener track 1, “Pre-K”, to the closing track 14, “Graduation,” it is hard not to feel like you’ve grown up alongside him throughout the listening experience.

What’s Next?

Tre’ has a new record that dropped on January 13th! The song, “Fantasy I Found,” has more of a Pop/EDM soundscape, with a post-chorus synth hook that will get stuck in your head for days. Tre’ describes the process as facile, stating, “the record was created pretty quickly. Most of the sounds that people hear in the track today were created the day I started producing it in early November.”

The message is about finding your fantasy amidst a difficult time, which has never been more relevant and needed in today’s world. If you are looking for your next new music obsession look no further!
